During the early years of his practice as a neurosurgeon here in Pune, he realized that there were several patients – especially in rural India – that were either not aware or could not afford neurosurgery. Ideas began to whiz through his head, He contacted several NGOs and other altruistic people, and the end result of many months of diligent hard work and persistence saw the birth of a Trust that address the practical problems that he saw in the society around. There were plenty of Trust Funds for Eye/cancer/ heart –related surgeries, but none or very few for helping patients with brain and spine- related surgeries.
Synapse Brain and Spine foundation was thus established in 2005 to take quality neurosurgery to the Indian masses. The mission statement of SYNAPSE became "Neurosurgical quality and charity will go hand-in-hand". The foundation has always strived, since its formation, to make the best quality neurosurgery available to the common Indian people.
Traditionally, charitable support by the society has largely remained confined to conditions like cancer, heart ailments, AIDS and paediatric treatments. However, the fact remains that a farmer with a complex brain tumour or a labourer with severe sciatica is also an indispensable member of the family and may be the only bread winner. He deserves equal help, if not more.
SYNAPSE has been founded to address this requirement of lending support to people with neurosurgical conditions.
