In this video, Dr. Malti Panchawagh from MVD Center Pune explains the facial nerve, a crucial nerve responsible for a wide range of functions—from controlling facial expressions to producing tears and saliva.
Functions of the Facial Nerve:
Controls the muscles of the face, enabling expressions like smiling, puffing cheeks, and closing eyes.
Provides the sense of taste from the front two-thirds of the tongue.
Regulates tear and saliva production.
Branches of the Facial Nerve:
Once outside the skull, the facial nerve divides into five parts.
Temporal Branch: Controls forehead muscles.
Zygomatic Branch: Controls muscles around the eyes.
Cervical Branch: Sends signals to the neck’s platysma muscle.
Mandibular Branch: Controls jaw muscles.
Cervical Branch: Supplies the platysma muscle in the neck.
Common Disorders:
Facial drooping on one side, inability to smile, or fully close the eye on the affected side.
Involuntary twitching of facial muscles on one side, including eye blinking, cheek, or mouth pulling.
Why Is This Nerve So Important?
The facial nerve not only controls physical muscle movements but also plays a key role in expressing emotions. It is closely tied to our identity and self-confidence. When affected, it can impact not just physical appearance, but also emotional and social well-being.
This small yet powerful facial nerve is responsible for crucial tasks like taste, smiling, tear production, and sound sensitivity.
The video further explores how this tiny nerve governs our emotions, expressions, and protection against loud noises.
